Scaramouche is a servant to an impoverished gentleman. He is a "stirrer". His carriage is very upright with a grand bearing, but he is all bluff, full of imaginary tales of his past adventures. He suffers from 'delusions of his own grandeur' and spreads malicious gossip in order to diminish the standing of other characters, in attempting to elevate his own.
